Is their another method to installing the winhttp resource? or does it have to be installed through POL?

I have looked for the resource online and have not found a reliable download.

If anyone could suggest a download site?

I've never experienced a problem downloading components.  I'm guessing its because your version of PlayOnLinux is really old.  Try downloading the newest version:  4.2.10

I preformed an update and got a warning that POL may not work correctly as xterm needs to be installed.

The application in the wineprefix is now reporting a connection failure.

Any thoughts?

I use my package manager to install xterm.  I normally get that error as well.  When xterm is installed, you won't see it again.  What is the exact error for the connection failure?

Are you offline?

The error is being generated from the application when loaded it states it cannot reach the update server at a specific IP address. I attempted to connect to one of the other update servers on a different IP address and am having no trouble now.

I have installed Xterm and am no longer recieving the error message, however I still cannot install the winhttp components through POL. Recieving the same error regarding the checksums being different.

What application are you using?

Not sure why you can't winhttp... I've never installed that one in the past.  I have installed:  wininet

There may be a problem with 64-bit Wine, 64-bit virtual drive and/or Windows version.  You may have to mess with each of those.

I always use 32-bit virtual drive, 32-bit Wine and Windows 7, but some packages are only Windows XP compatible.

According to MSDN winhttp 5.0 has been retired in favour of winhttp 5.1 for WinXP, which it also notes they have dropped support for along with server 2000 and 2003. I can download the specific windows update containing the winhttp 5.1 for WinXP.

This may explain the different version checksums for winhttp on POL.

Wininet installed correctly through POL on the WinXP 32bit wineprefix.

My overall goal is to change my standard OS over to Linux, but prior to configuring multiple desktops and laptops to Linux I figured it would be a good idea to get some hands on experience running some Windows software in wine and get a feel for it.

As all my software is Windows based (IE - Adobe Photoshop / Dreamweaver many more apps, and PC games which I dont want to abandon, however am unwilling to switch to a dual boot for.)

I also attempted origin install and similar problem logging in, seems the wineprefix winXP is having connection issues with any of the software I install. Even non-game applications, which led me to think that I am missing some of the network resources required to run the software in wine.

I noticed for example ras:RasEnumConnectionsW RAS support is not implemented! Configure program to use LAN connection/winsock instead!

and

tndll:NtConnectPort (0x5b0c1170,L"\\ThemeApiPort"

Also errors like winegstream.exe after disabling it in winecfg, however this just let to more questions as unhandled page faults crashed my apps.

Although I think I will take your advice and attempt a wineprefix with Win7 in a 32 bit env see if that resolves any of the issues I am having.

Much appreciate your help booman.

I see, this will require some trial-n-error as some programs have issues.  I have yet to install Photoshop, but there are reports that it runs in Wine.  I don't have Dreamweaver, but I've had success with SketchUp in PlayOnLinux.

I mostly test games and some require a few clever work-arounds, some runs just fine out-of-the-box and others will not run at all.

Doing some research on WineHQ's will definitely help.

I've never experienced network related issues in PlayOnLinux or Wine.  Is there a chance your firewall is on or you might have something blocking connections?  I have been able to install WinSteam in PlayOnLinux over and over then download/update games without issues.  I've even successfullly installed/download/update with Origin, Arc, Uplay and Battle.net

Maybe you should start by completely removing Wine and PlayOnLinux, then re-install them again.

Remember to install Wine first.

I just want to pitch in and say that I'm encountering the same error with both winhttp and wininet. Is there any way to ignore the checksum mismatch and install anyway? Would it even do any good?

Strange, I've never had errors installing wininet.  I've never used winhttp.

I followed your advice booman and uninstalled wine and POL. I did attempt to run the apps with the UFW firewall disabled with the same result.

After reinstalling wine and POL from the synaptic package manager my connection issues have been resolved. They are even updating after installation without a problem. (Even with UFW enabled.)

Thank you for your valuable assistance booman, much appreciate it.

No problem... sometimes those packages can have older libraries or versions.  It was worth a try.

Remember to mark this post as solved!

Enjoy your gaming

Hello, sorry I know this is not my post but I am really desperating. I have installed linux and erased windows (I know hardcore for the first time) and have been trying to use POL since then.

I have the same problems as reported here. winehttp and wininet need to be installed but give the:

Error in POL_Download_Resource
POL_Download_Resource - MD5 sum mismatch ! (1 attempt)

when I try installing using wine I get "sha1sum mismatch! Rename /home/xut/.cache/winetricks/win2ksp4/W2KSP4_EN.EXE and try again."

I don't know what else to try, I have tried all that you have suggested here, including uninstalling and reinstalling with synaptics but no luck.

I also tried many other things from other posts I've encountered but nothing seems to work around this! I have posted on other places but no one seems to care enough to reply....

I run  Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 480 @ 2.67GHz × 4 |||  ubuntu 14.04 LTS trusty 32-bit |||| Gallium 0.4 on AMD REDWOOD (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.6.0)

that means it is no longer available as a package through PlayOnLinux

You can always download it and install it manually with the Configure/Miscellaneous Tab/Run an exe in this virtual drive button.

Another way is to install it with Winetricks.  Go to Configure/Miscellaneous Tab/Run a Command Prompt

Or I think it says "Run a Shell"  something like that.

copy/paste this command to install Winetricks:

wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks

type this command:

chmod +x winetricks

Then type:

WINEPREFIX=/home/username/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/gamename ./winetricks winhttp

Note:  replace "username" with your Linux login and replace "gamename" with the name of the prefix you are trying to add this package to.

If that doesn't work, then just run the winetricks interface with this:

winetricks

Then you have to poke around to find the packages/libraries and check wininet or winhttp

I don't know how to help you all... but I do know work-arounds.

I have submitted bug requests in the past, but they never got resolved.

There are also packages that should be added like dotnet46, dotnet47, vcrun2015

All I know is work-arounds to get these running for modern games.
