Hi.

I've been using PlayOnLinux for some time now, and wanted to give something back. And one of the things I've noticed is that very few installable items feature descriptions, or and image avatar (bottom left).

I took the list of installable items in $HOME/.PlayOnLInux/configurations/search and found Wikipedia entries for (most) of them. I then collected the first paragraph of text and an image, if available. All this data was compiled into a list, with a preview available here:
-> http://www.kiberpipa.org/~ike/depo/playonlinux_descriptions_prewiew.html

This may still need some work, of course, but if you're interested, I can supply a text / sqlite3 database of the data, plus the scripts used to make this (bash, perl and some python). I can also put in some coding time to update the install scripts with description text.

All text and imagery should be free to use (copyright-wise), given the source and intended use.

In any case, keep up the good work and thank you.

One more thing -- all the texts are in English, but a lot of Wikipedia pages for games are written in other languages as well (French, German and Spanish for most of them) and I should be pretty easy to make a database for those as well. I've seen a lot of French wording on this site and in the program, so this may help quite a few people.

Hi ikolar,

It's a good idea. When I get more time I see into this further.

I've prepared similar lists for a few other languages, by downloading other language versions of the original English Wikipedia entries on POL items. Bellow is a count of matched POL items for each language (note there are 233 items total currently):

158 summary_fr.html
139 summary_it.html
136 summary_pl.html
131 summary_es.html
122 summary_sv.html
119 summary_de.html
102 summary_nl.html
80 summary_da.html
75 summary_cs.html
69 summary_no.html
67 summary_ko.html
62 summary_tr.html
59 summary_lt.html
55 summary_ja.html
50 summary_fi.html
50 summary_ca.html
45 summary_he.html
44 summary_simple.html
44 summary_ro.html
39 summary_uk.html
37 summary_ru.html
37 summary_id.html
37 summary_bg.html
34 summary_sk.html
30 summary_sr.html
25 summary_vi.html
21 summary_ar.html
17 summary_sl.html
13 summary_eo.html
12 summary_zh.html
11 summary_gl.html
10 summary_af.html
8 summary_eu.html
7 summary_hu.html
6 summary_ku.html
6 summary_be-x-old.html
5 summary_pt.html
5 summary_als.html
4 summary_wuu.html
4 summary_ast.html
2 summary_new.html

It would be possible to localize descriptions for all of these, but I recommend sticking with those I've already found 100 articles for. Someone else can well continue the work if she wishes; I'll be handing the source code to github.com shortly.

NSLW, any ideas on when you might find time? I need to know:
- where the sources of the script are
- where to place the description, and what html/formatting is allowed in it
- how to include different language versions
- how to set the cover image
- whether it's ok to use the English cover image everywhere (few other editions define a custom one anyway)

I would like to know how many users use different language than English to know if it's worth to put so many work in localisation.

Right now I cannot even enter the internet when i want :laught: It's vacation time and for me it ends on the end of next month so then i think i would be more frequent on this forum.

here

You can do it only if your're sending new script for validation. For the formatting you could ask Tinou as he makes this website.

See how it's done here, it's really simple

- how to set the cover image

the same script as above

- whether it's ok to use the English cover image everywhere (few other editions define a custom one anyway)

I don't understand, what other language would you like to use?

That is a nice vacation there, NSWX. Do enjoy it :)

Well, I figure it be nice to include German and French, at least; and write up an article how others can add additional languages if they so wish.

I took a look at the scripts and it seems the thumb and the description are supplied elsewhere. A bit of wiresharking turns up they're fetched from the web, ie. not downloaded along with the scripts. I'll PM Tinou for details and hopefully we can work something out.

Thanks again for taking the time to supply the answers.
