Hello,

I'm thinking of getting an 5xxx/6xxx as my next video card and if so, I would use radeon as driver and NOT fglrx, because of open source.
Is somebody here and can say, how the newest version of the driver is working with wine in 3d games?

I am interested in
- kernel version
- mesa version
- xf86-video-ati version
- libdrm version

What problems do you have? How good is the performance? If you had the chance, would you rather buy a radeon again or would you choose nvidia?

I know the test from phoronix, but I'm interested in user opinions.

Thank you :)

Bad. Don't do that. Open source drivers are NOT good for graphics. Doubly so with amd/anti cards. If you want the best performance, buy Nvidia, and use the proprietary drivers. I use nothing but that, and its great.

Even amd/anti proprietary drivers suck. I never buy their gear, as its nothing but problems, especially in Linux.

Yeah and no.
For 2 and a half year I had a HD 3870 and I know, fglrx sucks until today.
I changed it really fast to a 275 GTX and I know, nvidia is a better driver and has better performance then the opensource radeon driver, but opensource > closed source ;)
Unfortunately there is no overclocking support in nvidia for >4xx GTX.
(Excluding BIOS mod)

But there is a lot going on with radeon:
UVD is working with kernel 3.10:

a new direct rendering manager, dynamic power management support with kernel 3.11:

A year ago radeon was quite competitive with fglrx in Xonotic:

Linux 3.5 boosted the performance of radeon:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_radeon_linux35&num=1

At this benchmark, the 6xxx has nearly the same performance at Xonotic with fglrx as with radeon
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_radeonsi_catalyst&num=3

Here is a speed up with another LLVM Compiler Backend on HD 4650:

There are some patches improving the performance in some situation not merged yet

It is logical, that the newest radeon cards perform bad with radeon, but I don't want the newest ;)

See here the list:
http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/RadeonProgram/

The most programms were tested with Mesa 7.xx, Mesa 9.2 is the current version

Don't get me wrong, but i wanted information from somebody really using it with wine. (if these people exist ;))
Phoronix don't have much wine benches :(

Its up to you. Im just saying that open source drivers are not up to par yet with closed source, simply becaused we dont have access to their source code. No matter what, proprietary drivers will ALWAYS outweigh the open source drivers. That is not c community problem, but a manufacturer problem.

Its the nature of the beast. If you really want to know, just test them, and see what works. Im all about open-source, but not if its crippling my system, when a perfectly good alternative is available.

You paid for the card, which means you also paid for the right to use the drivers. :) Use 'em.

Yes, stick with Nvidia, you won't regret it.
If you go AMD, there is a chance your card may have problems with certain games or versions of Wine.
Be safe and just get a Nvidia GeForce.
