I'm going to give it a go again this weekend and see if there are any differences compared to my last try.

I don't own any consoles either.  I found that PC's can play way more games and also do a lot more like: Web design, image editing, video editing, animation, modelling, audio editing, CAD and more...

Can't do that with a console.

I still use Windows for my LAN parties, but one day I plan to convert all of them to Linux.  Hence all of my testing.

So I gave this a try last night and I did manage to download all 7+ GB of the game. The game verified and updated properly, and even performed a cloud sync but when it came time to "play" it would just spin its wheels for a couple of minutes before crashing. I have to say that working with Origin is somewhat frusterating!

Today I installed Origins again and managed to install and run the free game Bejeweled 3 but I still had no luck running Kingdoms of Amalur. I came across this error message when trying to launch:

err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7db22ba0 "wined3d_main.c: wined3d_cs" wait timed out in thread 004f, blocked by 005e

From what I understand this happens when two threads become deadlocked. It's interesting to note that I have encountered this error as well when running no$zoomer which essentially also serves as an overlay for NO$GBA emulator.

For now, my quest to get this game working in Origins has also run into deadlock. :P

Who knows what that error means?

Overlay?  So Origin has an "overlay" like Steam and Uplay?

Try disabling it

Ok, gave it another try.... Its rediculous becaue there is about 50 steps and Kingdoms still won't launch from Origin.  I never get the EA login screen after launching.  You know, the 2nd login screen that is a DRM checking authentication.

Yup I had the same set of errors as well when trying to run the 48 hour demo. But now I am playing the non origin version and have already invested 70+ hours and managed to build a level 25 pure rogue character. I'm taking the scenic route and playing slow..enjoying the environments.

Thats great!  If Steam runs another sale for Kingdoms, I might pick it up and do a step-by-step guide.
Glad you are enjoying Kingdoms of Amalur in Linux

Oh my you reply so fast and I am so slow! Please accept my apologies. My poor wife broke her foot and I am taking care of her so that is why I have been slower than in the past. :-)

You know I read about someone who managed to convice the Steam  department to give them a free game since they proved they had a working copy from another company. They may have gotten lucky and just talked with the right person. I doubt that it is a standard business practice of the company but it wouldn't hurt to try! From a business point of view it makes sense since if they give you good customer service you may like them and buy more games from them in the future! Anyway, I know someone managed to do this at one point. Maybe they were just lucky but I would give it a try! :-)

Currently my rogue character is at level 32 and I have done every single task and side quest in the Dalentarth and Plains of Etheral regions! I am overleveled now and have invested just over 100 hours. I'm crazy I know but I love this game!! (The dialog is pretty lame though and the voice actors are overused and recycled too much. The storyline component should have been improved. The combat, loot, skills and abilities are great.)

No problem, that is a good reason to not reply... priorities right?

Interesting point.  Send Steam a support request because I have a game that won't run in Origin and didn't buy it on Steam.  The only problem is Wine.  Steam won't support Wine and probably won't give me a free copy because Kingdoms runs fine in Windows.

Now if my Windows version didn't work with Origin, then they may consider it.

I've moved on anyways.  Too busy with Assassin's Creed Revelations in PlayOnLinux.  Which runs perfectly by-the-way.  Funny how some games won't launch because of DRM, but I know the game runs fine.

Pray your wife's foot heals!  My wife broke a toe once and was on crutches for a few weeks.  Not fun.  I swear to never live in a house with stairs again!
