Transfer save file to new version of game?

A new update of a game I manually installed with PlayonMac has released, but when I ran the game in a new virtual drive my save file is not present. I'm afraid to update my drive for the old version as I fear it will erase my save. How would I go about locating my save as well as transferring it to the new version?
