I'm running Diablo 3 on my 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 install, with the custom 1.5.4 Wine provided by Play on Linux. I get some really low frame rates (around 5 to 10) when playing Diablo 3, even with all the graphics settings on the lowest they can go and vsync turned off.

I have a standard Intel HD 3000 series card, but the game runs fine on my Windows install. Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem. I'm extremely new to playonlinux and wine in general, so I'm not sure if I need to install anything with winetricks for it to run. Also, I have heard that even if you have a 64-bit system, sometimes you need to install the 32-bit drivers. Could be part of the problem, but again, I am too new to know. Hopefully someone can help out.

I have a i5 3.3Ghz, 4GB ram, Nvidia 560Ti gpu. Game runs great on windows, near 100FPS most of the time. Runs at about 5 on linux, and the in game FPS counter, which is opened using CTRL-R, just spins randomly. It never stops, just zooms all over the number range constantly.

Do you have a 3D (compositing) window manager running? Like unity-3D or compiz?

I have Compiz running.

Disable it ...

Is there a special way to do this, or can I just go to System Monitor > Processes and end it there?

Try another windows manager --replace

For example metacity --replace on GNOME 2.x

I'm also running Unity on 12.04 and having the same issue.

At first it ran ok, but my computer gets extremely hot.

Are there any performance tweaks I could try? Also if there is an update to playonlinux are you the package maintainer?

Another question is if an updated version of the Diablo Wine will we be able to install it?

Thanks. I have a lot more questions. :D

Using a different windows manager didn't seem to help at all. Any other recommendations?

It seems to be more a driver problem than a wine performance problem.

Weird, the game runs well on Windows. Are there alternative drivers you would recommend? I'm currently using this http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?50038-Updated-and-Optimized-Ubuntu-Free-Graphics-Drivers to get the game running in the first place (also increased performance of Source engine based games).

That's probably as good as it can get concerning Intel videocard support under Linux...

I switched to windowed mode and I get about 15-20 frames per second with all the settings at low. At least it's playable now!

Switched to the 2D Unity option at the log in screen boosted Diablo 3 from 10FPS-ish to around 45FPS-ish on average for me. So, I recommend giving that a try.

Heya,

I just recently switched to Ubuntu and decided to try D3 with PoL. I got it installed just fine, but I get incredibly poor FPS. This is running in Unity 2d, as I don't even have Unity 3d installed (atleast I don't think so).

I've got ATI HD 5770, Phenom II quad core 3+GHz CPU and 4GB RAM and on W7 the in-game FPS counter reads 90FPS on maximum quality settings and 120 on the minimum ones. Using POL on Ubuntu 12.04 I get some 20 FPS when idle both on maximum and minimum quality settings. Switching to windowed mode or to Ubuntu 2D window manager didn't help at all - I saw no boost in FPS whatsoever. The game begins to be playable somewhere around 30 FPS (that being when surrounded by monsters with things exploding and stuff), so unless there's a fix for this situation, I'll have to go back to switching to windows every time I want to play D3 which I'd really hate. I'm a sad panda ...

spector : Have you installed the official amd drivers?

I tried both official drivers from the amd website and drivers downloadable from the ubuntu software center (I hope those are the two options - those from ubuntu are the fglrx package IIRC), but the game runs the same way on both. What seems strange to me (and I must say at this point that I'm not sure whether this is true or whether it's just my gnu/linux newbie-ness) is that both drivers were just different versions of the same package (that being fglrx). I don't know whether that's the way it's supposed to be (like there's some proprietary version of the package and some free version or what not) or whether that's just some misunderstanding on my part (caused by the countless re-installs i went thru trying to make the game work). But I know that those amd drivers installed catalyst with them whereas the "ubuntu" ones didn't - so that should probably mean those were really different drivers :) I'm sorry for all the confusion, I am just trying to provide you with as much information as possible. Is there actually someone whose game is running fine on an ATI graphics card? I am asking so as to consequently ask that person to give me a hint :)

I have test between windows 7 et ubuntu 12.04 with same quality.

Config :
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 970 Processor × 4
GeForce GTX 260/PCIe/SSE2
Memory 8 Go
OS 64 bit
résolution 1920x1080
détail max
Official driver

On Windows,
80 fps

On Ubuntu with PoL
20 fps in town
10 in fight

in 1280x1024 or windowed -> no change of FPS

with GLSL option disable you can have 10 FPS more.
