Install the precise commands to add the repository to your system. The POL version in the Ubuntu repo is painfully old most of the time. Once you add that repo, you should be able to update POL just like all of the rest of the software through the update manager.

you need curl, cabextract, ia32-libs, multiarch-support, p7zip-full, p7zip-rar, python, and wxwidgets, from what I remember. But after you add it to your repo and update, you should be able to install it, and its dependencies.

Geesh that is a lot of stuff. I just run the Terminal command posted at the downloads section. It usually installs all of those libraries too. Except for ia32-libs because I only have a 32-bit system. If you have a 64-bit system, then those are absolutely necessary. For some reason p7zip-full isn't installed. The first time you run PlayOnLinux there will be an error about p7zip, so those are necessary too.

Yup. I also use p7zip-rar, just to be safe.

I rarely see RAR's with games, but you never know

I meant that I always install that package anyway, on any system I work with. Not just with POL. lol. Its a habit, but like you said, you never know what it may use. Its usefulness outweighs its size by so much, I say 'why not?'. haha
