Hi

first off great site, I am very new to both this site and Linux so I apologise first off :)

OK I have followed a guide to run Fallout 3 using playonlinux, the only difference was it was a guide for using a DVD version not steam but there diddnt seem to be too many diffrences.

my system is a Asrock FM2A75 pro 4 running a AMD A10 6800k black edtion

I am using Mint 16.
I believe I have the latest version of wine & playonlinux.
the guide says I should use 1.3.26-xliveless2

After following it I get the below error from playonlinux wizard

"Error in POL_Wine
Wine seems to have crashed"

I then run debugger and I think the below are the errors?

sorry if I have not given you enough info yet or the wrong info as I say I am very new to both this and linux but eager to learn:)

thanks in advance for the help, am sure I am doing something very wrong.

Was it this guide:  Fallout 3

That guide is getting pretty old.  That guide has been redone with Wine 1.7.15.  Fallout worked fine with the Retail copy and then patched up, but I never tried using the Steam version.
I hope the Steam version has stripped away the XLive DRM in the patch.

Anyways, are you able to run Steam?
If you CAN run Steam and you have set -no-dwrite in the arguments.
The only other thing that might help is disabling the In-Game Community overlay.
The Steam overlay has been causing a lot of issues with Wine, but if you disable it, crashing games magically run again.  Very frustrating huh?

If you need a better walk-through, follow this Steam guide:  Steam Games Guide
It will walk you step-by-step on the -no-dwrite and overlay.

Also, instead of downloading the entire game again, try going to /home/username/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/fallout3/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Common
Drag-n-drop your Fallout 3 folder to your desktop.
Then when you are done with Setting up Steam again, go to the new SteamApps folder, create a "common" folder and drag-n-drop your Fallout 3 folder back into it.

Then launch Steam, click install on Fallout 3 and it will automatically discover files.

Hi Booman

I will try the other guide you posted as the game has stopped working, it keeps crashing when I try to load or make a new game.

Hi Booman, I followed your guide & the above part to save me downloading FO3 again.

But when I click play it says preparing first time setup again, says its installing microsoft directx 1 of 1, then the FO3 menu loads up, I click play and it just closes leaving the steam window open, any ideas on were I might have gone wrong?

thanks

Can you play any other games on your system?
Is your Mint 16 a 64-bit?

I yanked out the old Fallout 3 disk and may try installing it as well next week.
That guide is old, so if I find a newer solution, I'll definitely update the guide.

Hi

ye I can play FM2014 which I bought on steam fine

am running mint 16 64 bit

I'm assuming you have installed the 32-bit libraries (ia32-libs) for Mint 16...
Sounds like the Steam In-Game Community overlay is causing your game to crash.

Follow the instructions here at the bottom of the page to disable Steam Overlay: PlayOnLinux Explained

I diabled the Steam overlay when following the guide the first time, I might not have installed the 32-bit libraries so will go look into this then see how it works

booman

ok, good... just making sure.
Yeah, try this:
Open Terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T
Type:

sudo apt-get ia32-libs

Press Enter
Enter password
Then it will automatically download the 32-bit libraries you need for most games.

Are you able to play any other games?

I have the Retail DVD for Fallout 3 on my desk. Its on my list of "Games to test again" in PlayOnLinux. Maybe by this weekend I'll mess with it again. Since you are using Steam, I will have to test it with Wine 1.6.2 or Wine 1.7.8 and newer. Those are the only versions of Wine that work with Steam.
So don't uninstall it yet...

What video card are you using?
There is a chance you will need to install the proprietary drivers in Mint as well.

Thank you for confirming. Lets get to the errors.
Can you run a debug output?
1. Open PlayOnLinux
2. Select Fallout 3
3. Click Debug (not Run)
4. Copy everything in the debug window
5. Paste here

By the way, I'm completely re-doing the Fallout 3 guide. I should have it published in the morning.
I found it was easier to do a manual installation using wine 1.5.4-xliveless-rawinput3 and an xlive.dll library.

I was having some "stuttering" problems with the frame rates.
Can anyone verify its running in their Distro according to the Wine version I recommend?
I think its my system, but just wanted to make sure.
Thanks

At what point does Fallout 3 (Steam) crash?
Were you able to get to the Launcher, but after clicking "Play" does it crash?

Don't forget to disable the Steam In-Game Community overlay. That causes all kinds of games from crashing.

ALSA lib pcm.c:7843snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred

Quote

This is my current nightmare! I used to get the same error and it causes your CPU to work extra hard and slows down your games.

ALSA is the audio software that plays sounds. The problem is that your Linux distro is using ALSA and Pulseaudio for sound and they kinda work together, but PlayOnLinux and Wine only support ALSA.
So depending on your audio chip and drivers, you can get this "buffer underrun" error because Wine is trying to use Pulseaudio.
I never had these audio problems before in Mint 13 or Mint 14. But I have been in Mint 16 for several months and am sick of dealing with it.

Anyways... try disabling the overlay and let me know if the game launches.

I don't know what "disk overlay" is...
Are you sure that you are turning off the Steam overlay?  Its in Steam under settings

Overlay
Steam update also broke the In-Game Community overlay for some games. If your game won't launch, crashes or just won't play after installing, try disabling it:

Click Steam menu
Click Settings

Select "In-game"
Uncheck "Enable Steam Commuinty In-Game"
Click OK
