I have installed steam and have direct x installed. I have downloaded a few feww games to test this out and they seem to download and install without issue. but when i click to play nothing opens but it logs as time played after the fact. i have ubuntu 16 and am using an elitebook 8460p. 

Are you using a 64-bit Ubuntu?  You might need 32-bit libraries in order to play 32-bit games.

Also, make sure you have proprietary drivers installed for your video chip
