Hi,

After a fresh install of ubuntu and POL I attempted to launch a windows version of Deadlight through steam. Sadly, after a few moments of displaying a loading screen it disapears. When you click on the icon for POL the screen reappears with the loading screen then after a short while (10 secs or so) Deadlight crashes completely. I have had the same results while using multipule insallations of Wine and inturn multipule installations of steam and the game itself. Moreover, the same results occour if I attempt to launch the game in all of the following ways:

*searching for it and clicking on it

*launching POL, steam and deadlight in turn

*launching it from the top steam icon and drop down list

I am running the following:

Ubuntu 14.04

POL 4.2.2

The newly built PC specs are:

Memory 8GB

Processor: AMD FX 8350 eight core

Graphics: msi afterburner r7 260 (reporting in ubuntu as - Gallium 0.4 on AMD OLAND)

OS type: 64-bit

I have included the log info below and I hope someone could suggest a way forward. I have been working on this for a few days now and it is driving me crazy.

Thanks

N.B. also, it will not let me use any free to play games on steam. I dont know if this is importaint as I have no other pc games to test it with. This said, the system works perfectly with a linux native steam game (sepperate install of steam)

In my opinion Gallium 0.4 is ok for desktop effects only

Hey Petch,

I have no idea what a Gallium 0.4 is to be honest. My video card is a msi afterburner r7 260, could this be part of the issue?

I am running a full reinstallation of ubuntu now as I have a new SSD to play with. Hopefully the fresh install will get rid of the problems. Who knows!?

Also, when I check the ubuntu file for errors it reports two of them but does not tell me where or what they are. Could this be the problem?

I keep thinking about getting XP to play games on while using ubuntu as the primary os. Seems a shame though as all i have read says that Play on Linux and wine works really well. Is this a typical experience of a beginner at linux?

Cheers

Mmmmh actually it seems the "Gallium 0.4" name has been in use for 5 years, so it's impossible to tell whether it's antiquated or brand new...

Anyway, I guess your video driver is too old (or plain broken), see if you can find a newer one that supports your hardware.

Thanks

That is what I am focusing on ATM. With the fresh install of ubuntu I can play a free to play game through POL and Steam (very buggy), however, once I change to a propriatory driver which is given as an option i completely stops. Deadlight continues to be a problem with both driver set up. I will try this driver next which is from the AMD website:

AMD Catalyst™ 14.6 Beta for Linux

That's not always what we hear. Yesterday, an admin of openSUSE forum confirmed to me that it was perfectly OK to play with the free driver ("radeon", or Galium 0.4 indeed). The fact is that I ran a few benchmarks (using gputest) with the free drivers, and I got approximately the same score as the one I got on Windows 7 with the last Catalyst. It seems that the free drivers become very efficient, if we only talk about performance.

But indeed, it still lacks some features. I still have the same error messages as LordDude79 when I try to launch Tomb Raider with the free drivers. So, it seems to be impossible.

Using the proprietary driver, the game can be launched. But, fun fact: Tomb Raider menu tells me that I own a ATI Radeon 2900XT whereas I have Radeon R7 Graphics... and the game is *really*, very slow.

So, in fact, I can't play this game with my computer, whatever I do. Wine and/or Tomb Raider doesn't seem to be OK with the latest AMD GPUs/APUs.

And btw, this is related to this weel-known bug: https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=75276

The critical error in the log given by LorDude is this one:

LLVM ERROR: ran out of registers during register allocation

Some users report that the brand new LLVM-3.5 can solve part of the problem. LLVM-3.5 will probably be integrated in openSUSE 13.2, Mageia 5 and Fedora 21 in the next months.
