It works BUT causes "Upgrade in Progress" fault in Outlook

Hi All

POL -- what a wonderful piece of work; many thanks to those responsible!!  :-)

This post is different from in detail, but quite similar to in general, these 2 older posts...

  1. "How do I install the SP1 update for Office 2010 on Mint `15" -- pkbsr
  2. "MS Office 2010 - how to install SP1?" -- nmeyne

First, my info:

  1. Mint 17 Qiana 64bit KDE Edition.
  2. POL v4.2.5
  3. Wine v1.6.2
  4. MS Office 2010 Pro installation EXE ["sp0"] & my licence key, + separate EXEs for sp1 & sp2.

Objective:

  • Install Outlook [OL] & OneNote [ON] ONLY [do not need Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint], then upgrade to at least sp1, but ideally sp2.

Overview:

  1. Despite lots of confronting error msgs along the way, i have repeatedly reliably succeeded in installing sp0 [Outlook & OneNote] into default POL directory, & proven good operation of both [including successful creation of my 4 email accounts with reliable sending & receiving emails for each; yay]. After reading POL instructions & researching this site, i simply installed sp0 through the standard POL GUI "Install" function [not Mint Konsole], then choosing the MS Office 2010 script option in the Office tab.
  2. Whilst initially getting lots of failures & needing to remove it all & begin again, last night i was able to successfully install the sp1 upgrade, again simply through the POL GUI [not Konsole] ... PlayOnLinx -> Configure -> Select Office2010 virtual drive -> Miscellaneous -> Run a .exe in this virtual drive. Both OL sp1 & ON sp1 seem good.
  3. Unfortunately, every single time i have tried to install the sp2 upgrade, whilst ON sp2 happily succeeds & works, OL sp2 becomes crippled, requiring total removal again of Office 2010. This same bad result occurs regardless of taking a 1-step upgrade [sp0 to sp2] or 2-step [sp0 to sp1 to sp2]. As the *entire* motivation for me discovering & using POL was to find a way to run Outlook in my Linux boot, rather than need to constantly boot back to Win7 [or use Thunderbird+Lightning, or Evolution, or Kontact (each of which i have very heavily investigated & used)], this is a critical failure.
  4. I am very close to giving up on trying to solve sp2, & just instead try to be content with sp1, but i thought i should maybe try to post here just in case any magician might know a solution.

Problem Details:

  1. This is NOT my posting, but the picture here illustrates what my Outlook 2010 also looks like after this POL sp2 upgrade... http://www.techyv.com/questions/mailbox-currently-being-optimized
  2. Those two strange warning messages do not go away regardless of however many hours i wait. All the time that OL sp2 is in this state, whilst i still seem to be able to use Calendar, Contacts, Tasks & Notes as normal, wrt Email i cannot send or receive, nor even access the dialog box wherein I setup / delete / edit  the email accounts & OL data file [PST].
  3. Lest anyone suspects otherwise, there is NOTHING wrong with my Outlook PST data file. As part of my troubleshooting i have taken it to another pc, running MS Win7 Pro & Office 2010 Pro sp2, & confirmed that it works fine.
  4. Konsole transcript for sp2 upgrade attempt:

It says that you are missing a bunch of fonts (those "CANNOT FIND blah.TTF" errors), and I can see

"err:module:import_dll Library sqdedev.DLL (which is needed by L"C:\\users\\steffie\\Temp\\msib7e0.tmp") not found"

would likely cause errors, as well. Those are the only things that really stand out to me.

Also, have you looked into native alternatives like OpenOffice or LibreOffice? I use those religiously and never really have compatibility issues with MS files. Might be something to look in to.

Hi Ronin, thanks for responding.

Would there be any plans at all, anytime, for the POL team to enhance the existing POL scripts for Office 2010, specifically to include full compatibility with the sp2 upgrade? That would be ideal from my end-user perspective, as i have inadequate skills to be able to overcome all those error messages myself.

As to your "have you looked into native alternatives like OpenOffice or LibreOffice?", i tried to make this clear in the way i carefully structured the info in my original post, but will try again now. Up top i said this:   "Objective:   Install Outlook [OL] & OneNote [ON] ONLY [do not need Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint], then upgrade to at least sp1, but ideally sp2.". I *do* use my Linux Mint's native LibreOffice for docs & spreadsheets [though i confess i do still prefer MS Office (i came to Linux only this year, after ~3 decades of Windows & Office)]. However L/O does *not* have any PIM... & a PIM is *essential* for me [i have very intensively used MS Outlook for very many years, & so have lots of critical PIM data].

FYI, on that latter topic, this year i deeply explored alternative PIMs in Linux, specifically Thunderbird+Lightning, Evolution, & Kontact. With Evolution i found far too many faults & missing functionality even just during my initial review period of a few days, & so never seriously adopted it. However initially with TB+L, then more recently Kontact, i adopted them [one at a time] as my daily PIM, each for a few months, in the hope that they might prove good holistic replacements for Outlook [given that over all that time i had not yet discovered POL, hence at that time did not know that via POL i could successfully run Outlook (sp1) in Linux]. TB is good for emails, & L's Calendar function is quite good, but its Task capability is just awful, & Tasks are high priority for my needs. Kontact in many ways is excellent, & arguably the closest Linux PIM holistically to Outlook's functionality. Sadly however the longer i used it the more irritated i became with its various faults & missing features.

Eg, see here, for just 2 of the issues... [you might get a little smile, coz i promoted POL here] https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=261&t=123341   &   https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=261&t=123342

Regards,

Steffie.

As for us adding support; we are a community-based project. Anyone can add scripts. If you know how it needs to be improved, then please post it up, so that someone can code it in. You also need to understand that if it does not work on Wine, then we have no control over that (which is why I stay never rely on proprietary solutions and closed-source software.).

Furthermore:

As to your "have you looked into native alternatives like OpenOffice or LibreOffice?", i tried to make this clear in the way i carefully structured the info in my original post, but will try again now. Again, my comment was just an idea. No need to be sarcastic. That helps no one. If you have ESSENTIAL stuff that ONLY runs on Windows, then you should think about running it on Windows (or a virtual machine), or possibly post some data with fixes that can be put in to the the scripts for these apps. If you know how to get these running, please inform us. Anyone in the community can contribute the code commits. I would do it, but I do not own or use Office in any of it's styles.

If it is critical, and does not work in Wine (POL is just a front-end for Wine; if it is buggy in Wine, then bug reports should be filed at winehq.org. Check for your apps compatibility at appdb.winehq.org), then you should be running Windows for production machines and testing your software on Linux/Wine/POL, before deploying to a production environment, just to make sure that it runs correctly.

Also, did you even look at what I posted above? Some Google-fu would yield some nice results. ;)

I wish Wine/Windows software was smooth as silk, but it is not. It is the nature of the beast with proprietary, non-cross-platform software.

Hi Ronin

Oh dear, i seem to have offended you & i was absolutely not trying to do that at all, so i am mortified that inadvertently i somehow offended you anyway. Pls know that i definitely was not trying to be sarcastic [i was a bit shocked to read that]. The reason for my structured text above was *clarity*, NOT sarcasm. "Clarity" coz in my original Post i took a lot of time & trouble to draft my story in a logical sequence to allow a reader to see up top what my objective was, b4 then wading into the detail later. I interpreted your suggestion about native alternatives to Office as possibly meaning that despite my intent in my original Post, i'd somehow wrongly given the impression that i was seeking to install ALL of MS Office in POL. Were that the case, your suggestion would have made complete sense to me, but sadly as instead my focus was/is specifically Outlook, it didn't help me.., BUT i was NOT trying to be sarcastic to you.

Your "did you even look at what I posted above?" sounds a bit sarcastic & mocking of me, IMO. Yes i did; i read all your info very carefully. However i fear you gave me too much implied credit -- i simply do not have the knowledge or skill to know anything about how i should go about making POL install sp2. I am not a programmer, i have no coding skills at all.

Your "If you know how it needs to be improved, then please post it up, so that someone can code it in"... my same remark from the preceding paragraph also applies here. The ONLY thing i do know is that sp2 fails to install properly, with all those many errors per my original Post, but other than recognising there's a problem, i have no idea about how to fix it... if i did i would have just fixed it & never Posted.

Your "If it is critical, and does not work in Wine"... i presume that Outlook 2010 & Outlook 2010 sp1 must work in Wine, coz it runs quite nicely for me in POL [many times at startup it crashes several times, but after that it tends to run very nicely for many hours, & with almost all of the functionality as under Windows].My desire for sp2 was simply coz sp2 is newer than sp1 & so i imagined that it would be good practice for me to run with the latest patches. Given my inability to install sp2, i have simply been running with sp1 all this time, & quite happily.

Again Ronin, this friction that has occurred between us is entirely accidental & unintended. It's really unfortunate that things got unpleasant, but i hope i have managed a better job now in my explanations?

Steffie.
