ptrace fix; how and when?

How do I know to use the ptrace fix from the debug output, and what is it used for?

I am curious; I understand somewhat why it is grumpy, though, I am not sure how to troubleshoot an issue where it is needed. So far, it is usually implemented when .NET stuff is installed, correct? If it is needed, how would one tell, from debug output, if this is an issue? Examples would be sweet. :)

I have noticed that ptrace is required when installing dotnet 35 or earlier.

I have successfully installed dotnet 40 with Wine set as Windows 7 and never get a warning about ptrace.
Normally I use dotnet 40 with UDK or Unreal Engine based games.

Any time I try Windows XP in Wine and install dotnet 20, 30 or 35 PlayOnLinux will give me a ptrace warning and end the installation.

Ah. Cool. I know that it should throw an error about it, but I never ran into it, so I guess I just got lucky. I will keep that in mind. Thanks, Booman.

No problem... I don't really know anything behind the ptrace scope, but I remember Petch talking about security issues.  I hope one day Mono can handle everything dotnet related.  It would make our lives so much easier.
