I have to say, many do work (out of my library prior to doing checks first), however I have gotten into the habit ages ago when I switched to Linux only (no dual booting anymore).

The best source is the wine appdb:

https://appdb.winehq.org/

Check your games there, and you will get an idea of what issues (if any) will arise when trying to get the game to work.  If there are actual differences between the retail and downloaded versions (steam included), there is generally a separate version denoted.  In most cases the steam version works better than the retail (from what I saw).

A lot of games run in PlayOnLinux with WINE.
As long as Steam installs and runs properly, you have 100's of games at your disposal.  Many native Linux games and many Windows games as well.
I only have a small list of my games that won't run like:  Bullestorm and Space Marine
