I'm trying to troubleshoot some Master of Orion III (MOO3) graphics issues on my mid 2015 rMBP with PlayOnMac.

Here is my log output:

[12/24/18 14:52:46] - Running wine-4.0-rc3-staging moo3.exe (Working directory : /Users/rob/Library/PlayOnMac/wineprefix/MoO3/drive_c/GOG Games/Master of Orion 3)

I'm not sure how to get more debug information but am happy to do so!

The issue is described in this Wine bug:  https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29301

Essentially the game is zoomed in on the upper left two thirds of the screen (as if an 800x600 desktop were placed on a 640x480 screen and the end pixels were thrown away) and is thus unusable.  I have it set to emulate a virtual desktop of 800x600.  If I set it to emulate a larger virtual desktop (I've tried a couple settings, but 1024x768 seems to be what it uses), I get the entire application running, but I have black pixels on the right and bottom of the screen - as if an 800x600 desktop were placed on a 1024x768 display, aligned to the right and top of the screen.

I suspect this should be a relatively easy issue to fix, but I haven't spent time troubleshooting Wine in well over a decade.

I would be interested in any tips or tricks!

Thanks!

Rob

Hi,

Can you send us some screenshot so we can see the problems?

Thanks

I can't seem to replicate the 1024x768 sorta-success any more.  I'm not sure why or what could have changed.  Here's what it looks like at 800x600:

Are you really running the game on a virtual desktop?

Under the Graphics tab of Wine Configuration, I have the "Emulate a Virtual Desktop" box checked and have tried various resolutions under that setting.  It isn't a virtual computer, if that's what you mean - it's a MBP running OS X and the PlayOnMac application.

Oh yes... Virtual desktop are not supported by the winemac driver. You would need to install XQuartz and use winex11.drv

However, we removed X11 support from the last builds... Try with an older one just to see

Ah!  That explains why Master of Magic is failing on an X error!

What version should I revert to?

Try a 1.6x

Wine 1.6 or PoM 1.6?

Wine 1.6 and we're working!  Yay!  Thank you so much!

Ok cool!

Be careful, these old builds will not be supported for a very long time sad
