I won't be losing much; the install is scarcely 5 hours old, and is the last in a long line of installs I've had to do as I've groped my way around in the darkness of ignorance of Ubuntu's inner workings.

hahahaha. Thats exactly how I started out with Linux when I first started using it at home. I think a lot of go with that method.

If you have a 64 bit capable CPU, use the 64 bit version. There is really no reason not to. Again, I like to stick to LTS version, (8.04, 10.04, 12.04, etc), as they dont as much messing around during updates and stuff as they do the "in-between" releases. :)

Ok, finally finished.

So with 12.04 I did find that icon, and I switched it to Ubuntu 2D.

However, I'm still having problems.

Whether I'm in 2D or regular (regular just says Ubuntu), and whether or not I launch Guild Wars 2 via PoL or the icon it creates, all that happens is the launcher will open, and then disappear, with the icon on the sidebar remaining to suggest that it is -technically- running, but I'm unable to do anything with it besides closing it.

And, still, if I try and just run the .exe with Wine I get the black background error.

I want you to not even worry about, and disregard running it through Wine. That makes no difference on our end, because running it with wine is a WHOLE lot different than running wine through POL. Just disconcern yourself with running it through wine for the moment, as that wont help us troubleshoot.

What version of PlayOnLinux are you running now?

32 bit or 64 bit?

I downloaded PoL from the Software Center (and I'm on 32 bit so I'm guessing this version's 32 bit as well). I correctly installed the latest Nvidia drivers for my GTX 560 Ti (or as far as I can tell at least; TF2 seems to be running at the proper framerate/quality), which I think is version 310.44.

No, I don't think it's enabled unless it's done automatically; where would I turn it on?

So I just uninstalled the version of PoL I got from the software center, and sudo apt-get install python showed that python is installed fine; so how do I run PoL via the files from your site?

How did you install them exactly?

Also, I still dont see your debug or terminal output (remember... we NEED that output to troubleshoot). Please read the sticky at the top of the forum for how to get this.

Your terminal output will tell us that.....

And you arent going to be "running" it from POLs site. You are installing it to your computer, just like any other program. It should take care of dependencies for you. But, as stated, we know very little until you post debug output. lol :)

Yeah. Using PlayOnLinux. This is explained in great detail in the documentation for POL. You should always read the manual first. Thats why staff go through all of the trouble to make posts with screenshots and tutorials....

Here is the instruction manual. Please read it, along with all of the stickies on the forum. It gets tiresome to repeat ones-self many times per day. :)

Alright sorry about that, got it installed fine.

To install the drivers I went to the Nvidia website and downloaded the linux files. Went into Gnome, turned off lightdm (Gnome won't run the install if it's on), cd to the download, sudo sh whatever the .run file is called, run it (the .run file comes with a Gnome-based UI), turn lightdm back on, reboot, aaaaand...that's it.

Perfect! Thats the only way that I do it. :)

Now, all you have to do is install it from the script. Did you read that other link that says how to install supported software in PlayOnLinux? You shouldnt be choosing anything. The script does that for you. That is how POL works. Here is the link again to show you how to install software from scripts. Please read it.

And.... well, just because you may or may not read it, Ill tell you right here (but again, I cannot stress reading EVERYTHING that you are referred to. We wouldnt point you there if it wasnt valid, and why repeat something that has already been said, that should have been read?)


So:

Open PlayOnLinux -> click Install (at the top) -> search for Guild Wars II in the box in the install window -> click Guild Wars II -> Click Install (bottom left hand corner) -> most importantly, FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SCRIPT

Now, if you follow that link that I sent you, follow what I wrote above, and read EVERYTHING and do what it says, then it should work.

If you dont follow directions or do it correctly, it will not work. You are trying to install it without running the script, which is not how POL works (which is clearly stated in the documentation).

So, again, please follow those links and those directions, install it like that, and then re-post. If you dont read it and do it the right way, its impossible to help you.

Alright here's the output log using a version of Wine I've seen work with other people.

Like I said before: Whatever you see people doing elsewhere is not very relevant to installing the game via a POL script. The script writer most likely to great care to do all of that for you. Again, please disregard WINE by itself until you learn to install games in POL correctly. Its only going to confuse you, and will not really help at the moment.

There is no Guild Wars 2 script in the database; that's the problem :S

Alright, I got it working! It's patching as we speak.

However, I'm not able to login; the launcher claims that it can't connect to the login servers.

I'll wait for patching to finish before I worry about it (can't play till that finishes anyways), but I'll hop on here if the problem continues and I'm unable to find a bugfix.

Yeah. Let the installer/patcher finish, and then try it.

I wonder if it needs something else. Lets see what happens when its done. Glad it got working, though. :)

Try the Shell: Ctrl+Alt+F1 or Ctrl+Alt+F2

Couldn't he login this way and give a password to "root"?

I know its "bad" to login as root, but he needs "admin" access and that is the best way.

He already reformatted his system before I could get that far. :/
