I've gotten three versions of Hearts of Iron (1, 2 and Arsenal of Democracy) working under POL. This is a grand strategy game covering the period from 1936 up to 1947 or the 1960s depending on version.

Platform: Ubuntu 16.04 on Intel. Dell 22" monitor at 1920x1080.

POL version: 4.2.12 with python 2.7.12

Wine version: 1.4 or 1.5 32 bit. They don't seem to work properly with anything later. YMMV

Configuration details: none at all. Just install and run.

They are working about as well as they did under windows. All features functional. You might need to alt-tab out of and back into the game so it runs full-screen on a large monitor. The game has no resolution controls, but POL seems to take care of it.

  1. Via game directly:
  2. Find the desired mod at this site and download it.

  3. Unpack mod folder inC:\Users\*Username*\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV\workshop\content\281990\

If folders are missing, try running the game or make them by yourself.

  4. Unpack .mod file in

    C:\Users\*Username*\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV\mod

  5. Enable desired mods from the launcher and click Play button.

The latter way is more preferable when you have direct Internet access.

Enjoy the game:)

Via Steam:

Find the desired mod at Hearts of Iron IV Workshop page.

Visit mod’s page and click the Subscribe button (you should be logged in).

Wait until files are downloaded (make sure your Steam app is running and has access to the Internet).

Enable desired mods from the launcher and click Play button.

What about Hearts of Iron 3 - and specifically the mod BlackICE?

I have recently moved away from Wndows to Manjaro - but am finding it impossible to get HOI 3 running past the first few seconds of the intro screen - before it crashes.

Is there some magic that needs to be performed here?
