Fallout 3 crashes on first level load

The load bar completes, but then crashes.

So I install fallout 3 via the playonlinux script that's in it. It all installs fine, does the wine patching (reports it's running -Fallout 3 version), and even launches the game fine.

When I click new game, it starts loading the first level, but crashes when it appears to be done loading.

I tried googling this with several term permutations, but couldn't come up with anything useful. What am I doing wrong?

Do you've got quad or triple core cpu?
Do you've got ATI card?

Core 2 duo, e6600 is my CPU.
I am running 2xnVidia 260 GTX's (216 core) in SLI (I think I set it to AFR).

1) Edit file ~/My Games/Fallout3/FALLOUT.INI
change
bUseThreadedAI=0
to
bUseThreadedAI=1

and add after
iNumHWThreads=2

I doubt if it helps because it's fix for quad core cpus.

2) Could you run on single graphic card by disabling SLI or taking one card away for a second?

I will try these when I get home, starting by disabling SLI.

None of this fixes it I'm afraid. I also updated to POL 2.7, which now causes the game to crash a bunch earlier in the loading screen, but I am effectively getting to the same point.

although I can only find a fallout_default.ini not a fallout.ini

maybe start Fallout 3 Launcher first and then Fallout 3

What is your Fallout 3 language version?
Do you've got 64 bit os?
Do you use Steam version?
Did you set Default Wine version to run Wine programs in PlayOnLinux to System in Environment tab in POL configuration?

In ~/My Games/Fallout3 you should have got:
Saves
FALLOUT.INI
FalloutPrefs.ini
RendererInfo.txt

oh, I misread where the file was. I tried those changes in the proper fallout.ini, but they did not help.

English
32bit
disk installation
im using the version the POL script set, which is 30-Fallout

Quote from BloodyIron

yes, but you can override this setting and you may run on other (non patched) wine

I ran out of time trying it this morning, but last time I tried it, it had no effect. I will try again when I get home.

What other solutions could there be, in the mean time?

switching to system version of wine did not resolve it :(

thanks for your help so far, do you have any more ideas?

Anyone? I'm still at a loss as to what on earth I'm doing wrong.

Btw, I don't think I mentioned this, but I'm not using the ubuntu provided drivers. I followed the instructions to load the ones from the nvidia site. I havn't seen any issues until now (although I'm unsure about SLI). So I'm not certain if this has anything to do with it.

I have the same problem. I did everything NSLW told you to do but it still doesn't work :(. I think perhaps there maybe a problem with wine. I don't know for sure about that yet.
