Ok, my new installation challenge is Runes of Magic (maybe you can help me out with that one) - The scrip I found here is very very old and doesnt work.-

https://www.playonlinux.com/en/app-940-Runes_Of_Magic.html

I get an error at some point and have to cancel the installation but still have a folder called Runes of Magic inside Playonlinux's virtual drives - Honestly dont know what to do with that folder now. (Should i delete it?)

My Computer have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (x86-64) - Wine version 1.8 - POL version 4.2.10

Cinnamon version 2.8.6 - Linux Kernel 4.2.0-36 generic - Memory 3.2 GiB (has 2 memory cards 2 GiB each one - dont know why it keeps saying i have less ram - is a mistery to me cheeky)

Processor Intel Core 2 Duo CU E4600 @ 2.40 Ghz x 2

Graphic Card Advanced Micro Devices Inc AMD/ATI Park (Mobility Radeon HD 5430)

prog-if 00 (VGA Controller) - I think i didnt forget anything - Hope you can help me guys with your magic brains!

Cheers from Buenos Aires - Argentina - Lorena

I recommend installing and patching with the official Runes of Magic download.

First you might want to do some research at WineHQs

Make sure you are using a 32-bit virtual drive and a 32-bit version of Wine.  I suggest Wine 1.8.2

WineHQ's recommends:

  • vcrun2005
  • ie7
  • wininet
  • dotnet2

I always install these too:

  • corefonts
  • d3dx9
  • tahoma

These will only install if you set Windows as Windows XP in Wine Configuration
Apparently the updater will crash, but you can relaunch it.

Make sure to set GLSL as Disabled in PlayOnLinux Configuration

Yes, it turns out Runes of Magic uses the GameForge client.  So I'm going to try installing it first.  Its like a Steam or Origin client that will download the game for you.  WineHQ's posts "platinum" rating for it.

Well im installing using

vcrun2005

ie8 (dont have ie7 in my playonlinux list)

wininet

dotnet20 (dont have dotnet2 on my playonlinux list)

corefonts

d3dx9

tahoma

Lets see what happens --- fingers crossed

Gameforge installed just fine with:

  • corefonts
  • d3dx9
  • tahoma

I won't be installing the entire game cause I'm at work and its 15GB download, but you should start with GameForge, then start the Runes of Magic download.  After its done, go to your virtual drive path:

/home/lorena/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/runesofmagic/drive_c/Program Files/GameforgeLive/Games

Look for folders like:

  • redist
  • _redist
  • support
  • directx
  • visual C

This will help to you know which libraries are required by the game.  Then you can go back to PlayOnLinux Configure and install them.

dotnet20 dotnet30 dotnet35 and dotnet40 should all be in the Package Installer (Component Installer)

I totally understand.  I play lots of games with my Kids as well.

So yes, don't install the game just install GameForge then download through GameForge.

After that you might have problems launching the game and thats where the Packages come into play

Im sorry Booman but I starting to give up with Runes of Magic... Its driving me crazy. Plus I was reading the support forums and seems RoM Client is driving everybody crazy (no matter the OS they use the download fails over and over).

Was able to install Gameforge client and started the game download (not once but 5 times). Everytime after several hours downloading (total download is 15GiB) it stops and the client tells me its not able to connect to internet (internet connection lost). So I have to restart the Gameforge client and the download, loosing all the previous data downloaded (I was able to get to 65%).-

I posted a new thread in RoM tech support forums asking for some answers (hope i get some advice there)

The game looks awesome but its doesnt save previous downloaded data. And Im not going to set up a windows dual boot again just for a game.

Update - Got some answers from RoM Forums:

They pointed me to this link to be able to download the full client. Its 1 .exe file and 12 .bin files.

http://board.eu.runesofmagic.gameforge.com/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=458860

I was reading on winehq site and seems there is a way to install the game using these files.

Downloading them as Im writing this post - Maybe im going to need some orientation after downloads are done but my main idea is to follow winehq's guide.

I was able to download the entire game through GameForge this morning.  Didn't have a chance to launch it, but I will try tonight.

Thanks for the link to the game files.  This is usually a better way to download and install the game with PlayOnLinux.

You can do a manual installation and select the RomSetup.exe when you are asked to install a program.  The manual installation gives you a lot of options for setting up your virtual drive.

  • 32-bit Virtual Drive
  • Wine version
  • Libraries (Components, Packages)
  • Installing program
  • PlayOnLinux Shortcut

Give that a try and let me know if it works.... or if you get a bit further at least

That sucks!  I hope you had backups of your data sad

Its always nice to have a fresh install anyways.  Keep me up-to-date once you get started again.

I got Runes of Magic running in PlayOnLinux!

Everything downloaded via Gameforge and then upon launching the updater there were some more updates.  Now it launches and plays fine.

Ok Im back in the saddle again!

Was able to get a nice HD very cheap. My computer is ready for museum anyway.

Well I want to try installing using that .exe plus the 12 .bin files if possible.

My internet connection is just 10 MB so its going to take forever through the Gameforge client.

As I told you before, I was able to install Gameforge but took forever to download the client and failed connection with internet many times.

So what you think i should do? BTW ie7 not available on playonlinux libraries. How can I get that?

booman Wednesday 11 May 2016 at 13:59
booman

I didn't need IE or half of those libraries.  I only installed:

  • corefonts
  • d3dx9
  • tahoma
  • vcrun2005
  • vcrun2008
  • vcrun2010
  • vcrun6

Thats all
