playonlinux only lets you update wine to version 6.17 for the 64-bit version, I would like to know if they are still working or was it abandoned?

Abandoned by who? WINE Team? probably, but it still works so... just use it.

John, do read: https://www.playonlinux.com/en/news.html

Wine team (CodeWeavers) do make their own software: CrossOver.

Should we switch over to Lutris in stead of using PlayOnLinux which is in fact slowly dying?

you still have the option to use system wine instead of the POL version, so getting latest 64 bit one by default is not a problem

if you need a specific older one, you can download those from somewhere else and put them into the POL folder, so no problem to get Proton or GE versions of wine either

yet I am currently trying to move to bottles as it offers the similar features (unlike Lutris which is much more limited compared to POL) but is up to date with the only thing not working for me is importing existing prefix from POL (and using symlinks for prefix, but you can chose were to create the prefix in the first place)

You can still use PlayOnLinux and manually insert specific Wine versions into PlayOnLinux, for example Wine-GE at https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine-ge-custom/releases. And installing extra libraries can be done by usinge Winetricks in the PlayOnLinux Console.
