Below are the specifications of my desktop computer;

Ubuntu 11.10 x64 Oneric / Metacity / Compiz / w/ unity off
AMD x64 3.4ghz processor
ATI Radeon 4500 with 2GB vram
System Ram is 5GB

Software;

Playonlinux 4.1.13
Wine 1.2
Guild Wars Trilogy DVD Rom Edition (1st Attempt)
GWsetup.exe downloaded from NCSoft Account Page (2nd Attempt)

Guild Wars installs just fine with the script included with the latest playonlinux. downloaded and updates the patches just fine. I did the install from DVD ROM the first attempt, and the download from NCsoft for the second attempt. How ever when I launch the game to play, I get to the login screen and no text is being rendered, on buttons, help screens, input boxes.

Thank you for suggesting the Microsoft fonts, but that has made no difference, text is still not rendering. Graphics look sweet though and flow nicely,

Ok, that's weird

Try to install the latest version of wine (Manage wine versions -> 1.3.32)
Then assign it to Guild Wars' virtual drive (Configure menu)

Yes, weird. Guild Wars was always one of the games that I could install flawlessly.

Tried wine 1.3.32 as you suggested. only now. not only don't I see any text, the UI and guild wars logo is gone. all I have is the nice background, blinking input point, cursor and music.

Sorry for this late reply, but I'm sure it will give you text on the buttons ;)
I had the exact same problem on my laptop (11.10) and fixed it by adding:
-dx8
to the guildwars shortcut.

Make sure your shortcut command looks like this:
env WINEPREFIX="/home/steven/.wine" wine C:\\\\Program\\ Files\\\\Guild\\ Wars\\\\Gw.exe -dx8

That should do the trick ;)


EDIT:

Seems that the problem is within the Vertex Shader Support, you have to set that to "None". Which is basically the same as the "-dx8" switch does. As it forces the game to run on DirectX8, setting the Vertex Shaders to a much lower quality.

Exact same problem here. Ubuntu 12.10 (AMD64), PlayOnLinux 4.1.9, Wine 1.5.3. Using PlayOnLinux's configuration tool to add -dx8 to the "Arguments" for Guild Wars seems to have solved it. Thanks!

Couldn't see any mention of "Vertex Shading" or similar though.
