So I downloaded PlayOnMac and that works; I got Steam and that works; I even downloaded the games I wanted from Steam successfully as well (in this case, Civ 5 and Sins of a Solar Empire).  The problem is when we get to actually playing the game, when Steam does the "performing first time setup."  Once we get there, it is "installing" forever and simply never progresses past step 1.  The progress bar will either 1) Not progress whatsoever, or 2) it will progress to the very last bar, and stop, and never continue.  I can't figure this one out - I'd appreciate some help!
