City Racing crashes

Hello,

Last month, I've installed Sparky linux (version GameOver) for my son, and tried to install the game "City Racing" via PlayOnLinux (http://www.gametop.com/download-free-games/city-racing/screenshot1.html).
Installation was successfull (except for two curiosities), game starts up well, but after 30s.-2min. the game crashes.
The curiosities are:
- The car isn't complete: only the wheels and windows are visible (but the car can be steered)
- No audio

When the game crashes, a popup shows that the program game.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to be closed, referring to a possible problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine.
"Show Details" -> see backtrace below.

Afterwards, the game can be started again, but crashes each time after about one minute.
I have reïnstalled it several times, but without success.

My system:
- SparkyLinux 3.4 “GameOver” i486
- Kernel: Linux 3.14-1-486 (i686)
- Distribution: Debian GNU/Linux jessie/sid
- Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3400+
- VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C51G[GeForce 6100]
- Desktop session: LXDE
- Graphics driver: NVIDIA legacy binary driver - version 304.117
- POL version: PlayOnLinux 4.2.5
- Wine version: 1.4-dos_support_0.5

Originally, after "City Racing" was installed, the Wine-version was automatically set to "System". In this condition, the game doesn't even start up. Message: "An error occured in PlayOnLinux. Error in main.
City_Racing has crashed".
After changing this into the only other option (1.4-dos_support_0.5), the game starts up as described above.

I think it just needs a tweak or two, but I can't interprete the error-files. Below you can find the backtrace, and a bugreport. Anyone who can help me out?
Many thanks in advance for your help!

Kr,
Luc

Hello,

Can someone help me out here please?

I believe I've provided all required information, and followed the preferred forum-guidelines.

Many thanks in advance,

You did a GREAT job providing all the right information.  Thank you for doing that!

I noticed some Direct Music errors.  Try this:

  • Launch PlayOnLinux
  • Select the game
  • Click Configure
  • Go to Install Components Tab
  • Search for:  directmusic
  • Click Install

This should fix the sound but not sure if it will fix the missing model graphics.

You can always try installing other components like d3dx9 and see if it fixes the graphics.  There are a few d3d errors so, this might help.

If it breaks the game completely you will have to remove the game and virtual drive.  Then start over and try a different component.

Sometimes just downloading a newer version of Wine and setting that virtual drive to use it, might fix the problem.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your reply!
I've tried the sugestions that you proposed, but unfortunately without success so far.

For the sound:
Installed directmusic, this took 17 seconds.
Play the game -> the screen goes black and nothing happens.
Restart PoL -> the screen goes black.

So, I've reïnstalled City Racing several times (while this was probable not necessary), and tried the d3dx9-options (without directmusic) with several versions of Wine:

d3dx9
Wine version: 1.4-dos_support_0.5 -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.
Wine version: 1.4-dos_support_0.6 -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.

Reïnstalled City Racing + installed d3dx9_29
Wine version: 1.4-dos_support_0.5 -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.
Wine version: 1.4-dos_support_0.6 -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.
Wine version: 1.7.33 -> screen goes black, hardware restart necessary.
After hardware restart: play the game -> nothing happens, system hangs, hardware restart necessary.

Reïnstalled City Racing + installed d3dx9_35
Wine version: 1.4-dos_support_0.5 -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.
d3dx9_36 installed as well (without reïnstallation of the game), same Wine-version -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.
d3dx9_40 installed as well -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.

Reïnstalled City Racing + installed d3dx9_42
Wine version: 1.4-dos_support_0.5 -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.
d3dx9_43 installed as well (without reïnstallation of the game), same Wine-version -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.
Changed Wine version to 1.5.5 -> game crashes after 1-2 minutes.

Are there any other possibilities to solve this?
Many thanks in advance!

Luc

Wow, its great to hear that someone else is as stubborn as I am with games.  I test games for fun, so I'm installing them again and again and again.

Those old 1.4-dox_support versions are way too old.  I noticed you tried 1.7.33, but maybe its way too new?

Try Wine 1.6.2 because its the most recent stable version.  I've had the most success with it.
Unfortunately you are treading new ground here, so it will be up to your trial-n-error to get this game running.  I'm not familiar with City Racing, so its hard to know what it needs to work.

It is not listed on WineHQ's so I'm running blind here...  I noticed that it is free, so I'll try downloading it as well and seeing if I can get it to run.

City Racing appears to be a Unity 3D game.  Unfortunately Unity 3D doesn't run on Linux yet... At least the web version doesn't.  I'm guessing it plays in the browser after you install it, but we'll see.

One thing you can do is find out what redistributable libraries it needs to run.  Go to the game folder and look for "support" or "redist" and see if it has any DLL's or stuff like Direct X, Dot NET Framework, Visual C, etc.

Those will be critical to get some games running.

Hello booman,

We're getting there, almost resolved! "Playing" around brought me the idea to download the game from another website ("https://city-racing.jaleco.com/" instead of "http://www.gametop.com/download-free-games/city-racing/"). Installed it with Wine version 1.6.2, as you suggested.

This solved the graphics-issue completely: the car looks as it should, and the game doesn't crash anymore! Waauw!

The only issue that remains now is the sound. I'v installed directmusic again, but nothing happens (the game simply doesn't start).

Just for the record, if other people might be interested in the game, the steps I took before coming to the solution above:

Installed Wine-version 1.6.2 (with the previous download) -> screen goes black, no mouse, hardware restart necessary. After HW-restart: "Play game" -> nothing happens, system hangs, no mouse, HW-restart necessary.

Installed Wine-version 1.6 -> screen goes black, no mouse, HW-restart necessary.

Installed an older Wine version out of curiosity (1.4-dos_support) -> game crashes.

Back to the solution now, and trying to get the sound right. I got into the folder you've mentioned (via PoL), but this only contains these files: game.exe, Game.ini, link.ico, link.url, unins000.dat, and unins000.exe.

And these folders with their files:

Data -> Objects.hdr, Objects.pak, SD.hdr, SD.pak, Textures.hdr, Textures.pak, World.hdr, World.pak

Save -> profile01.sav

Any idea how the sound can be solved? If I need the game folder, where can I find it? The folder that I've found doesn't contain the files you mention.

Thank you for your time as a volunteer!

Luc

Awesome!  so you can play fine but without sound?  That is GREAT!

Your sound problems are related to Alsa:

ALSA lib conf.c:3325:(snd_config_hooks_call) Cannot open shared library libasound_module_conf_pulse.so ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default

Citat

I'm not really an ALSA guru, but I can speculate a few things...

What audio output are you using?  Analog/HDMI
Do you have anything else playing sound while City Racing is playing?

Pulseaudio is the default process for most sound in Linux, and it manages ALSA.  Kinda like how PlayOnLinux uses Wine to play games.  Well, Wine only supports ALSA and not Pulseaudio.

So when you launch a game, there can be audio issues due to that lack of support for Pulseuadio.

Hello,

The sound-issue is solved as well now!
The game needs both components 'directmusic' and 'dsound'. With one of both, the sound doesn't work. This is my first experience with PoL, and I couldn't have solved it without your help. Thank you!

For the record, to answer your other questions: the game does not play in a browser, it's a "standalone" game. The sound output is analog, and nothing else is playing sound while City Racing is running.

I will set this topic to solved, but one more question: Is this topic sufficient to add this game to the list of supported games? If so, I'll address this by e-mail to the people of PoL.

Wishing you all the best in testing games!

Luc

Ah, totally forgot about that!  Nice job!

Yes, you can contact PlayOnLinux developers and they will add a script for City Racing.

This is not entirely true. We contribute scripts, yes, but they can (and usually are) written by community members. If you are interested in writing a script, then please read the scripters docs in the Documentation section, and try to write a script for it. We don't really take requests to write scripts, but if you write one, and it works and fits standards, then we can for sure publish it and add it to the library of installers.

Hi,

I'm not at all familiar in writing scripts, but I'll have a look at it.

Just go to Documentation on the PlayOnLinux website here and it explains how to write scripts
