Problem when installing with POL

Hello!

I'm very new here. Yesterday I've tried to install Fallout 3 GOTY with POL (3.7.6) using the Fallout 3 script, but the native Fallout 3 installer stopped when started to install Games for Windows Live. This has practically stopped the whole process. I've seen that in another window POL wants to install Games for Windows Live Client, too, but only after the game has successfully installed. Which couldn't be done, because of the freezing. I guess it might be a Wine problem instead, but I thought I should report the problem, maybe somebody knows the solution.

Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
PI

I've forgotten to add: I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

Wait a minute... I've just discovered POL didn't use Wine 1.1.37 but the system default 1.1.44.

Trying it out again!

Games for Windows Live installs itself silently so I don't know how did you figure out that it hangs.
Today I changed Wine version to 1.1.44 in script and installed successfully Fallout 3 GOTY with DLCs

Thanks for the input!

I thought it hangs because it didn't use the DVD and the HDD and the directory didn't grow plus the indicator didn't proceed at all in 30 mins while all other windows were closed.

Now I've purged both Wine 1.1.44 and POL completely to go for a clean, fresh install of POL. I hope that will solve my issue. :)

It's good to hear that it's possible to install it anyway! Thanks for the test! :)

PI

I'm having a problem running Fallout 3 GOTY as well. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and after I installed the game using POL and tried to launch it, the game would appear with the desktop panels and mouse cursor still showing. When I would move the cursor, it appears tethered to the center of the screen, although the in-game mouse cursor works properly.

Here's a screenshot to illustrate my problem:

How do I fix this?

It's regression and someone should do regression test to get rid of that bug. In meantime you can use earlier Wines to fix the problem.

Hi!

I've managed to install the game after a fresh POL install! Great!

Unfortunately, the game does not run, it throws the following exception:

It does not even starts to read from the DVD, which is strange.

@vDub: How does the game run, by the way? Is it ok? No freezing?

Cheers,
PI

That error is nor from Wine nor from POL so maybe you've got faulty Fallout 3 copy.

I didn't really play it since I couldn't figure out how to make it so that the desktop panels and mouse cursor don't show when the game is launched. However, despite the problem, it seems to run fine.

@NSLW:
I've bought it in the shop, it's original, and it works in windows xp, except for freezing after a while which is very common if you read about the different forums about this game.

I'm only trying to get it work with ubuntu, to see if it works at all and how it performs and if it freezes when playing on ubuntu.

I don't want to give up on it, I'm still trying to make it run! :)

@vDub:
Have you played it on windows? Did you have freezes?

Thank you guys!

Have you tried to change Linux language to English and then start Fallout 3?

Hello!

I have the same problem as pi24. I get those 2 unhandled exceptions, and the game doesn't start. I tried almost all wine versions, installed dll-s, drivers etc. I think the problem is the localization. We both use hungarian version of goty, so this should be the problem. However, I can't solve it. I tried to change linux language to English, but it don't help. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you guys!

I have Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and this "unhandled exception" isn't depend on the hardware I think
