I recently purchased the Steam store version of Bioshock. According to WineHQ, Bioshock has a platinum rating. I use the install script, and every single time I try to play the game, it crashes. I am running Linux Mint 15 with POL version 4.2.1. I am using the Catalyst 13.6 beta drivers. I got an error saying that I was out of virtual memory, which for some reason was set to 64 (even though GAME_VMS in the script says 256). I changed it to 512. This fixed the problem with the "out of virtual memory" error, but I get more errors which I haven't been able to solve. Here's the debugging output... perhaps you guys can help me out!

fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation (nil) 1 (nil) 0
[0720/204643:ERROR:network_change_notifier_win.cc(126)] WSALookupServiceBegin failed with: 8
wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x00000000 at address 0x78147440 (thread 0053), starting debugger...

If there's any information I've left out, please let me know!

You may not have enough video ram for this game. What type of graphics card are you running?

Can you also post the full debug output?

I think it might be another issue, considering this game only needs 256mb of video ram to play.

Please put full system specs and that debug output (the whole thing) and lets figure out what the problem is.

I know this is probably a knuckle-headed response, but what exactly do you need on my system specs? I can give you this much- Dell Inspiron N5110 w/a core i5 processor. 8G of RAM. Using Catalyst 13.6 beta drivers on the integrated chip. Anything else? I will post the debugging output sometime tomorrow... it's late here, need some sleep.

Just read the stickies at the top of the forums to learn to post your debug output, and that should help us.

Thanks for your answers. Here's the answer to your requested information. I know some of this will be repetitive, but I just want to make sure everything is covered.

Disto: Linux Mint 15 "Olivia"
Software: Wine 1.6, configured using Windows 7
Desktop: Cinnamon
Computer: Dell Inspiron N5110, Core i5, 8GB memory

Here's my most recent debug log. I've changed settings until I get the least amount of errors. These seem to be the most common ones.

[07/21/13 09:36:48] - Running wine-1.6 Steam.exe steam://rungameid/7670 (Working directory : /home/mike/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/bioshock/drive_c/Program Files/Steam)

wine: Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x00000004 at address 0x7cdd7f8f (thread 0056), starting debugger...
wine: virtual memory exhausted

The game is still "running", but it's frozen. Hopefully this will help you troubleshoot my problems. Thanks so much for your help!

What graphics card are you using? Do you have the current drivers installed?

Also, have you tried rolling your Wine version on your actual system back to 1.4.1? Which one do you have installed on your system (not in POL)?

Its failing to connect online, it seems. Im not sure why.

If you need to stop the game, you can click Tools -> Close all playonlinux software, or you can kill it by the task manager or from the commandline.

Make sure you have winbind installed, too. Umm, make sure you have multiarch-support and ia32-libs installed, as those are needed. Um, make sure that gecko installed properly (PlayOnLinux -> configure -> select drive -> Wine tab -> Wine uninstaller, and look for gecko.

Its something network based, and I cannot figure out what is stopping it. Im very interested to know if you get this fixed what the solution was.

He wrote that Catalyst was installed for an integrated chip, this means he is using the onboard video chip in his Dell laptop.
Probably not enough horsepower to run Bioshock and no way to upgrade.

Okay, I'm going to try this again... I have tried replying, and it just comes up blank. I'm going to try this again. I upgraded to the Catalyst 13.8 drivers to see if it would make any difference. The game plays, but I have terrible video artifacting... so bad that the game is unplayable. I will post the debugging output if I'm able to get it to show up.

Switched to the integrated chip. The game loads, plays for a few seconds, then crashes. When the game crashes, it freezes my system. Here's what I can give you of the debugging output. It's the same error over and over again:

Any help on these errors?

That is a lot of directx errors.
Must be something to do with drivers.... has to be... has... to... be
Notice all the gl this and gl that?
Wine isn't forcing opengl to run properly, thats my guess

Okay, that's a start, at least. Do you know how to get Wine to get OpenGL to run correctly? I'm banging my head against the wall with this game. It flat out crashes on the integrated chip, and on the discrete chip, the graphic tearing is so bad the game is unplayable. I've been messing around with changing all kinds of stuff, but so far nothing. I've tried it on POL and straight through Wine on Linux Mint, and I've done the same on Arch. I had it running on Arch, and it seemed to be running well, so I saved it. Every time I re-load it now, it crashes. Not sure what to do with it. Bout ready to just play it on my wife's Windows 8 laptop, if it works.

When you had Bioshock working in Arch was it on the same chipsets?
I get a lot of errors like that on my Chromebook because the GPU doesn't support the version of DirectX or OpenGL.

In PlayOnLinux configure, the Display Tab, did you set the Direct Draw Renderer to opengl?

To be honest, I have the most success with games on a Desktop with a dedicated video card like: GeForce 550 Ti
And a 32-bit system....
I've had a lot less success with laptops cause they are just not meant for gaming.

Thanks for your help, booman. I'm still going to play around with Bioshock and see if I can get it to work. Yes, the same chipsets- I am dual-booting Linux Mint and Arch. I have tried Direct Draw all three ways, and there's no difference in Bioshock. I'm going to set up a 32-bit system on my wife's old desktop and make it a gaming computer. I'm not sure what video card she has, but it I can get it running most or all of my games, I will be really happy!!

So far, most of my games are working just as well or better on Arch, so I'm currently in the midst of transitioning to it. I know it's a more difficult distro, but I just have too many glitchy problems with Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros, and there is a lot I like about Arch. I like the fact that I can install it once and it's kept up-to-date all the time. Yes, there are regressions from time to time, but I'd rather deal with the regressions than to have to fuss with the problems of Ubuntu/Mint that always seem to just hang around and never get solved. I'm currently running Arch with Unity. Unity is not as fast as the Ubuntu version, but it seems to be more stable and I've had no problems with it so far.

If I come across a fix for Bioshock, I will let you know how I got it fixed. Cheers!!!

Thanks for the update, its really looking like that laptop just can't handle Bioshocks graphics engine.

If your wife's desktop has an old video card, I recommend upgrading. Depending on what the motherboard can handle of course. If you are not sure, just post the model & model number.

If you can upgrade, there are a lot of $100.00 Nvidia video cards that will have a lot of success with Linux.

Quote from booman

What's odd is this is a newer laptop... it's only a year old. I'm going to poke around in the BIOS and see if there are any memory settings that I can adjust for the integrated card. The discrete card should be able to handle Bioshock with no problem. It's an ATI Mobility HD 6450M, which is a FAIRLY new laptop card. I can get the game to run on it, but the video glitches in it are almost constant, and that makes it unplayable. I haven't loaded the Catalyst drivers in Arch yet, and to be honest, I may not use them at all. I seem to have better luck with just using the integrated chip with the ATI card turned off. We'll see what happens in the future!

Playing around with PlayOnLinux versions of Wine can help too.
I just got Crysis 1 running in Mint with a special patched version of Wine only available in PlayOnLinux.
It had some graphical bugs too, but now its running very nice.
