PlayOnLinux 3.8.3

Monday 27 September 2010 at 19:37

[box title=New_PlayOnLinux_logo][/box]
PlayOnLinux 3.8.3 is now available! But what about 3.8.2?
Due to a little mistake, 3.8.2 didn't have the updated translations. So we decided to jump to a new version to fix that issue.

What's new since 3.8.1?

Bug fixes, updates and a couple new features are in for you...

Bug #17, regarding an error message that popped up during manual installations.
Bug #26, regarding a function used by scripts, that didn't work properly.

As for updates:

PlayOnLinux now warns you if you are operating offline, if you are using the Offline plugin or if you are using a development version, like it does when a new version is available.
The Capture and Advanced Wine Configuration plugins have been updated to versions 2.2 and 3.6 respectively.
The code has been modified to - probably - fix bug #392513 from Launchpad.
Practically every English string has been revised to ease use and translation. Thanks to Salvatos for this big update. Please note that PoL may not be fully translated in your language yet, so don't hesitate to post suggestions on Launchpad and they will be checked and approved by the appropriate team for inclusion in the next version. The following languages are already 85% translated or more: Hebrew, French, Czech, Russian, Lituanian (in descending order of completion).

And the new stuff:

playonlinux-cmd offers even more possibilities as it is now possible to list installed applications, search for a new one to install, delete an existing application and launch an application - prompts will be asked in the console instead of the regular graphical interface, except for Windows applications proper.

A new useful function for scripters, that changes the name of the desktop emulated by Wine when it runs in "virtual desktop" mode. Esay to use:
Set_WineWindowTitle "My Wine Desktop"

A new plugin for post-install shortcuts, called "Detour".

Downloadable here as usual!

Same concept as ever: a few teams of crazed worm fighters give it all they've got in various arenas using a set of ridiculously powerful weapons. Learn to deal with the wind and the various obstacles standing between your target and yourself and join a fight of tactics and randomness.

Spam mail

Sunday 5 September 2010 at 23:03

Hi everybody!

Friday an evil user used the private message feature to send spam to more than 900 users.
Because we automatically send an e-mail (unless you have unchecked this setting in your profile) to inform you about your incoming private messages, you received an e-mail.

This user was banned for life on the same day, but this was just a "quick fix".
So last weekend, we worked hard to implement an antispam/flood system efficiently.
If someone wants to do this again, they will be automatically banned for one day after a few e-mails.

We are really sorry for this spam message and we hope that this doesn't happen again.

2 Ubisoft games available

Friday 3 September 2010 at 23:16

Hi everybody,

Tonight, I bring you two great games: Assassin's Creed 2 and Prince of Persia - The Forgotten Sands.

Assassin's Creed 2:
The game is set in the 21st century, with player-controlled protagonist Desmond Miles escaping from Abstergo Industries with an employee, Lucy Stillman, after being forced to relive the genetic memories of ancestral assassin Altaïr ibn La-Ahad through a machine known as the "Animus". After escaping from Abstergo, Desmond enters a device which is more advanced than the original Animus, the Animus 2.0, and relives the genetic memories of ancestral nobleman Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who lived during the Renaissance period of the late 15th century in Italy.

Prince of Persia - The Forgotten Sands:
The plot of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands begins as the Prince is riding through a desert on his horse, on a quest to see his brother, Malik, and learn about leadership from him. When the Prince reaches Malik's kingdom, he finds it under attack by an army who, he belives, seeks a treasure buried deep within. The Prince infiltrates Malik's kingdom, and meets up with Malik in the treasure vaults.

PlayOnLinux 3.8.1 is available!

Friday 3 September 2010 at 15:10

Hi everybody!

PlayOnLinux 3.8.1 was released this morning.
[box title=New_PlayOnLinux_logo][/box]

What's changed in the new release?

Bugs #30 and #31 were fixed.
Function introduced with PoL 3.7.7, for auto_shortcut was buggy in last release, now fixed.
Full rewrite of an internal function that installs a plugin shipped with PoL automatically on startup.
Plugin Capture was updated with the last version (2.1.1).
Translation was updated with the last available on Launchpad (synced the 2010-09-02).
And finally new tools appeared, playonlinux-cmd.

About translation

Many thanks for all translators, I don't know how to export the nicknames of people that made translations on Launchpad. With your help PlayOnLinux is now translated in a least 3 new languages such as Korean, Czech, Turkish...
You can continue to help by translating, the next release will be synced with the latest translations.

What is playonlinux-cmd?

This is a new tool to manage PlayOnLinux in scripts, this was requested on the bug tracker as a feature... and this tool is not yet fully finished.
Currently you can ask for an update of the script database, run already installed software and start the installation of an application.
There are some known bugs that I discovered just after releasing PoL 3.8.1. Currently you can't use this software if you have never run PlayOnLinux before (will be fixed in next release).
To force an update: playonlinux-cmd --update
To start an installation: playonlinux-cmd --start-install 'Sofware'
To run already installed sofware: playonlinux-cmd --run 'Software'

Please note that --start-install doesn't install silently but just directly opens the graphical GUI for the software that you request, so you always need to answer prompts.

We advise you update your PlayOnLinux version.
